Thoughts inspired by ‘Phantoms in the Brain’ by Ramachandra:

Body Image, Imaging and Phantom Limbs; Nations, Faiths and the Brain as Axis Mundi:

Body image as feedback loops mapped to a strip of surface cortical brain tissue explains a number of phantom limb perceptions, literal ghosts in the machine. Disconnected ‘hungry neurons’ seek discharges in adjacent tissues thus grounding a circuit otherwise left without discharge. Visual centers lacking the multiple coordination’s necessary to compile a completed preliminary report through the thalamic switchboard, reroute through the brainstem to muscular autonomic responses producing ‘blind sight’; response without volition. This manifestation of Bonnet’s syndrome appears to use a connection transmitting raw image input outside the feedback loop of an undamaged system, at least partially through lower level processing without an immediate feedback signal.

These overlapping regions coordinating the senses, responses and subjective awareness demonstrate the generation of a ‘reality’ in a neural system. The human spectrum determined by genetic limits expresses cultural processes with similar functions. Emergent interactionism evolves both multi-bodied society and its individual transmission through sole brains.

Assembly codes of human societies and individual brains and the cellular instructions to an ovum easily divide into a triplicate unity. Limbs of muscle and bone for workers and armies appear after only a few cell divisions into blastula. Nervous system senses spread along the spinal column. The metabolic business of digestion and distribution forms the culture of any city state or individual body in its central mass. Mapping a single mind, or a corporate collective intelligence, or opening a DNA blueprint into a living body and brain, is semantically embedded in the Indo-European root language and operating myth and ritual that spawned nations and faiths from Ireland to India, as described by Bruce Lincoln in his “Myth, Cosmos and Society, Indo-European themes of creation and distruction’.

The arms as armies, the legs as peasants whose work supports all in the whole civic body, the head filled with specialized functions: singers, healers, poets, craftsmen, artists, priests and kings. And lurking there with the executive powers, the Big Ideas; tribal and national gods.

Our conceptual processes remain as much a mystery to us moderns as were the Spirits of our ancestors. Our consciousness still obsesses us in the convulsions of vast phantom limbs we see as corporations and nations; war.
