The Collective Discernment of Divine Intention

This statement defines the concept of “resonant hub”, and begins to explain how a group of people within a resonant hub can collectively communicate with energies that are traditionally described as divine or sacred.  We see the concept of resonant hub as a primary vehicle for inspired and healthy social transformation, as local and world culture moves through a transition from discordant and fragmented local independence, into regional and global interdependence and collaborative cocreativity.  Through the “resonant circle process” described here, we affirm that it is possible for a group of sincere people to contact the divine or ontological energies of wholeness or “source” – in themselves, in the universe, and in one another – and position themselves and their collective decisions within the framework of that wholeness in a healthy and informed and wisely guided way.  A global movement embracing these ideas might emerge from a national or international network of resonant hubs.

In her book Birth 2012 and Beyond, Barbara Marx Hubbard explains hub resonance in the following way:

The symbolic image of the “Hub of the Wheel of Cocreation” refers to a sacred space in which we can resonate with the ascending currents of the universe. It is here that we become “frequency holders” for the Great Shift. When we create a real hub with others and learn to resonate as a group, we amplify the frequency of the resonance of each member.

The hub stands for a sanctified place in consciousness for shared revelation of the metapatterns of creation. Here we resonate by resounding back to each other the evolutionary impulse we each feel within. As we meet in groups, virtually or physically, we tune into the deeper pattern not only within us but within the emerging process of the whole. The hub can be cultivated to become a field of collective consciousness generated by those resonating within it. The hub is also a place where our “inner synergy” or coherence with the Source joins with the “outer synergy” of our work in the world. The inner shift and the outer shift become one in the Hub of the Wheel

Within the context of these ideas, some of us are coming together in Santa Barbara to form a resonant hub, and are beginning to explore and expand the affirmation and ideas reviewed in this statement.

For a review of sensitive or controversial words such as “divine” or “sacred” or “resonant” or “guidance”, please see the definition notes at the end of this document.

1. We are coming together to form a resonant hub

A “resonant hub” (or “resonant circle”) is any group of two or more people who come together in a spirit of mutual respect and cocreativity, who wish to consider some common agenda or issue or concern, and who are interested in developing “resonance” among the members of the group.  We define resonance as an inspiring empathetic energy connection between people that can occur spontaneously, and becomes stronger when cultivated.  Resonance involves trust, listening, and an interest in genuinely understanding and caring for the people in the group.  Resonance emerges in a context of social intimacy, and takes time to develop.  Resonance helps mediate and resolve misunderstandings, and can help resolve tensions that arise because people define words or understand ideas in different ways.

In our experience, resonance can be intentionally cultivated in the context of a “circle” that brings together a group of people who wish to interact in an intimate and inspired way.  A “resonant circle” (or resonant hub) can be convened for any reason.  In the context of this discussion, we consider ways that a diverse group of people can connect to “the divine” in the context of a resonant hub, by following basic practices that are widely understood and have evolved for thousands of years in more or less the same way.  Resonant hubs (or circles) usually have some rules or a fundamental agreement that participants agree to honor, which help maintain the cohesion and integrity of the circle.  Because these rules or guidelines tend to be universal and timeless, resonant hubs tend to be very similar in fundamental ways.  This similarity of fundamental design means that independently developed and geographically dispersed hubs have important commonalities, which usually means that they can successfully interact with one another, which helps expand the potential for a regional or national or international “network of resonant hubs”, all of which can be interconnected.

These following statements describe the emergence and development of resonant hubs that we believe can play an important role in helping national and world civilization move through a potent and sometimes dangerous process of transition.  Resonance is a kind of universal energy-connector that helps transcend the limitations of common understanding based on language.  Resonance helps overcome “Babel”, and helps diffuse misunderstanding and the suspicion and anger that often arise in misunderstanding.

2. We are capable of directly receiving sacred divine guidance

We who participate in this resonant hub are capable of directly receiving sacred spiritual guidance from or through a universal energy or divine template or archetype, generally taking the form of “oneness” or “the one” or “the whole”.

Other more traditional forms of spiritual attunement – such as “communing with Jesus” or “meditating on AUM” or “listening to the voice of God” – are not inconsistent with our approach. We believe and assert that this oneness or whole can speak to us or through us, and collectively guide us, through our attunement with it and with one another.

This process involves skill and knowledge as well as intuition. It involves excellence guided by grace and virtue. Developing this attunement is a skill and an art that can be learned – and in part remembered and awakened, as an innate and natural part of ourselves – and does not involve an obedient or ideological belief. It does require trust among the participants in the hub, and a confidence that the experience of the collective attunement is real.

This experience of connection and guidance is grounded in and guided by a sense of wholeness and balance, through normal human psychology and intuition. No special psychic abilities or altered states of consciousness are required. The potential for this attunement exists in anyone able to respect and listen well to their fellow human beings, and flows from this capability. Learn these guidelines and principles, we assert, and practice them, and anyone can experience this kind of collective spiritual guidance.

3. This guidance is received through a sacred circle process

Our attunement to this universal template is convened and stabilized through a collective “circle” process, and is informed by our sensitive attunement to one another, through a spirit of respect and caring for one another. In this context, guidance and spiritual influence emerges through the center of the circle.

This common and shared center represents “mystery”, and is the opening into the unknown and the uncertain, through which the newness of our collective cocreativity emerges into the world and into our conscious awareness.

This process is based on the principle described in the Hindu tradition as “Namaste” – suggesting that “God in me becomes (is) one with God in you”. When that overlapping process of “congruence” involves several people, perhaps as many as 12 sitting in a circle – as one energy overshadows another, or becomes identical with it or “occupies the same space” – this attunement is deeply cross-correlated and authenticated. It is this process of cross-correlation and sensitive mutual congruence that validates and confirms the sacred circle process. The authenticity of the process is guarded and maintained through humility and sensitivity.

Errors and misunderstanding can be polished out of the circle through a kind of spiritual/psychological “rock-tumbling”, as the rough or noisy edges of each person in the circle are burnished and smoothed by the caring attention and insightful perspectives of others in the circle. This burnishing is a universalization or globalization process, leading towards what Barbara Marx Hubbard calls the “Universal Human”, as the weaknesses or flaws of our “local self” are polished away.

These principles are not unique to us, and we did not invent them. They are “natural and organic” and are instinctively understood all over the world. They have arisen among indigenous groups since the beginning of time, and can provide a natural and simple foundation for a revitalized international civilization.

4. This process is replicable at any level of scale or social organization

This is a replicable process that can be realized and expressed at all levels of social organization, from the individual to the collective. Our hope and intention is to expand the dimensions of the resonant field, to include as many individuals and groups as is possible, at all levels of social organization, from the local to the regional to the global, as we connect to all other individuals and groups around the world that share these same guiding principles.

5. Our experience of the divine is consistent with traditional religion

This oneness is consistent with – and may in fact actually be – the energy or concept of God or Holy Spirit or Divine Ground as that energy or concept has been understood in traditional religion and spirituality. We believe that we are discovering ways that large social groups can be guided by the sacred in ways that bypass problems inherent in traditional religion, yet do not compromise the beauty or intention of traditional religion at its best, or disrespect those religions. This guiding template can be known in many ways, and given many different names.

In our collective action and attunement, though we may differ on specific points and approaches, we do not dishonor or disrespect other religions or other spiritual paths. We are attuning to a universal energy that may in fact be the same energy or principle that animates and informs other religions, though understood in different terms and approached in different ways.

6. Leadership within a resonant hub emerges through the center

This understanding and approach helps address questions about “leadership”. We recognize that leadership emerges from the center of the circle, and is shared by all of us, though it may be true that the actual words or a particular action comes most clearly through one of us in particular – probably because that one person is the most appropriate channel or voice within the circle for that particular message or action. If the spirit speaks its message through you, give that message voice and don't consider issues of “leadership”. Let the spirit lead.

7. Flexibility and spontaneity within a resonant hub

The circle experience within a resonant hub is “led by the spirit”, and, within the basic limits of resonance and respect, cannot and should not be constrained to any particular form or expectation.  Circle guidelines and rules should be flexible and adaptive, and “follow where the spirit leads”.  The experience within the circle is one of constant emerging creativity, arising from the unknown and unmanifest into consciousness.

Each person in the circle maintains their poise, balance, and dedication to an attunement with the divine as they know it, and a respectful sensitive relationship to all other persons in the circle.  Creativity emerges when relationships are honored.  Each person in the circle is unique, and introduces a unique perspective and interpretation.

8. Unity and diversity and the “wheel of community”

We follow a “spoke” model of our relationship to one another.  Each person in the circle is unique, with a unique history and perspective and skill-set and values.  People take different positions on issues, including the concepts of resonance and circle and guidance.  We are entering the province and “religion and politics”, which can easily become critically explosive.  The differences among the members of the circle are held together in a spirit of respectful co-creative resonance, and everyone in the group attempts to resolve issues constructively by searching for innovative new solutions that involve balance, proportion, and the greatest good.
