What is the Role of Spirituality and Religion in Public Life?

Some of us are beginning to explore the role of spirituality and religion in politics. Are we in the USA experiencing a crisis of values today? Are our leaders exercising the highest degree of wisdom and ethical insight? Is partisan argument really the best way for our nation to make its most important decisions? Are we as citizens called upon to strengthen the ethical foundations of our society?

If we are called to respond - how can we take on this task without violating our tradition of church-state separation?

In religious and spiritual traditions from every culture, and certainly in the Judeo-Christian traditions of the USA, people of religious and spiritual faith are called to a high standard of personal ethics, and to take responsibility for the spiritual welfare of their society.

Through our emerging new interfaith voters initiative, we are considering ways that our shared heritage of religious beliefs and spiritual ideals can exert a wise and illuminating influence on our shared political environment.

An Emerging Dialogue

We are considering ways that we can come together...

  • in a fully inclusive spirit of listening and dialogue - ending the "blame game" and the spirit of disrespect, accusation and anger
  • in ways that convene the highest possibilities of our culture and the talents of our citizens
  • to create closer relationships between all persons involved in the decisions that shape our collective future
There is a lot to say on these subjects. This is a big challenge, and demands the best from all of us. We are beginning to consider how our spiritual and religious traditions can most properly inform and influence our approach to political life. You are invited to join the conversation.
