Subject: AVAAZ PETITION TO G20
Date: November 7, 2014

Dear Michael --

I am interested in this theme, and in this petition, and thank you for pushing this theme -- but wanted to post a comment here, on an issue that comes up for me.

What do we do in the context of a complex petition where we agree wholeheartedly with many of the points made, and consider them important and vital and urgent -- yet might not agree with ALL the points made in the petition?

From my point of view -- this "mono-blocking" of complex political statements (bundling many complex statements together under one yes/no decision, in a "monolithic block") is problematic. I think your work is important, but I would be more comfortable if I could "vote" one-at-a-time on the many points you make -- accepting most of them, but maybe not all.

I will probably just ignore this concern and sign your petition. But I do feel that this kind of "bundling" is a problem "inherent in the current paradigm" that needs to be addressed.

As I see it, this kind of question I am raising is a core concern for activists who want to build a significant global movement with grass-roots participation. We have to somehow acknowledge "diversity" and the independence of participants, who can best be called into a common movement through a kind of "resonant overlap", where common ground and agreement is not based on strict either/or acceptance of a complex multi-part agenda, but enables a more fluent and sensitive approach that builds strength without risking failure on one sub-point.

You might simply say, "Yes, Bruce, you have a point -- but right now, there's no way to address your concern. That kind of collective decision-making just doesn't work today. There's no medium for it."

You would generally be right in saying that. But it's something that "movement revolutionaries" have to address, I would say -- if we want to build a strong global movement that does not enforce monolithic conformity.

Thanks.

Please can you promote and sign our new AVAAZ petition to the National Leaders represented by the G20, who are gathering in Brisbane, Australia on November 15 & 16 for their Annual Summit. We ask them to truly represent the voice or the will of the majority of their people and the World’s people. We intend to present this petition to the G20 in Brisbane on November 15. We have two weeks to collect as many signatures as we can. http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/The_G20_Save_the_Planet/?niXaiab

Our National “leaders”, represented by the G20, no longer represent the voice or the will of the majority of their people and the World’s people. They only see short-term gains and the global economic system runs on the assumption of infinite resources. One billion out of 7 billion people live below poverty levels. With the threat of climate change and the likely breach of planetary resource limits, human civilization faces an energy emergency of global proportions. The growing threats to the human future of Nuclear War and Global Climate Change now severely threaten our future and all life on Earth. There is a saying that - Your lack of active participation in politics does not exempt you from the responsibility for the results. http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/The_G20_Save_the_Planet/?niXaiab

Elisabet Sahtouris, in "The Biology of Globalization” states "The Globalization of humanity is a natural, biological, evolutionary process. Yet we face an enormous crisis because the most central and important aspect of globalization - its economy - is currently being organized in a manner that so gravely violates the fundamental principles by which healthy living systems are organized that it threatens the demise of our whole civilization."
